Were Indigenous peoples in the Cowichan Valley consulted about the possibility of amalgamation?
During the Citizens’ Assembly on Amalgamation process, the Citizens’ Assembly Chair and a First Nations member of the Assembly met with representatives of surrounding First Nations. Maureen Tommy, former General Manager of the Cowichan Tribes also presented to the Citizens’ Assembly and described the relationship between the municipalities and Cowichan Tribes as beneficial and respectful. The Province of BC has been consulting with area First Nations on this matter. In the Province, local governments are encouraged to exchange information with neighbouring First Nations as it helps to build and strengthen relations and provides a strong foundation for ongoing engagement on common interests.
You Decide June 23 is the official third-party public information campaign on the amalgamation referendum led by Munro Thompson Communications Inc. on behalf of the City of Duncan and the Municipality of North Cowichan.
